Why this petition matters

Started by Silpa Patel

Every year, multiple schools within the Folsom Cordova Unified School District hold fundraisers at Chick-fil-A.

The Trevor Project has shown that the rise in anti-LGBTQ rhetoric has led to a rise in suicidal thoughts among LGBTQ youth. Data released by the Trevor Project in 2021 reveals nearly half of all LGBTQ young people thought about or tried to commit suicide in 2021, and nearly one in five transgender and nonbinary youth attempted suicide.

The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ youth (13-24) seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S. — and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds.

I'm asking Folsom Cordova Unified School District to make a policy for the Principals that they cannot approve fundraisers with businesses with exclusionary histories and policies. We need to end our relationship with Chick-fil-A.

How is Chick-fil-A anti-LGBTQ?

Chick-fil-A's founder, Truett Cathy, founded the WinShape Foundation. This foundation is currently run by Don “Bubba” Cathy, senior vice president at Chick-fil-A, and WinShape's vice president is Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-fil-A.

The WinShape foundation has donated over $5 million to groups that support traditional marriage, including Eagle Forum, Focus on the Family, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Family Research Council, Exodus International, and the Marriage & Family Legacy Fund, groups which seek to provide, among other works, a conservative biblical interpretation about marriage, sexuality, and gender expression.

The foundation gave more than $1 million in 2015 to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The religious organization seeks to utilize athletes and coaches to spread Christian teachings and imparts a strongly anti-LGBTQ message.

Additionally, the foundation funded the National Christian Foundation, which spent a great deal of money and resources influencing Ugandan politicians. They passed a bill criminalizing homosexuality and making it punishable by the death penalty.
