Why this petition matters

Started by Rebecca Timmis

We all love our apples and bananas, but Campbell's re-instatement of an ineffective and inhumane method of bat culling means our sweet treats now come at a much higher price; the price of animal cruelty.

'Bat shooting is inhumane and ineffective.'

This is the conclusive outcome of independent studies into shooting bats to protect crops. Yet Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has re-introduced the practice only moments after winning the last State election.

As a small business owner struggling to survive, I understand the importance of keeping our local economies strong and giving as much support as we can to Queensland businesses. But we must ask, at what cost? After doing some research I discovered that these animals are shot with shotguns, and only 5% die instantly. The rest are left to die slow and painful deaths.

Bat shooting DOES NOT deter other bats from attacking crops. Is the LNP’s plan to wipe out the species altogether? The only effective solution is crop netting. If the LNP can’t manage to support fruit growers by increasing subsidies for netting costs, at the very least they must cease the supply of permits to shoot bats. It does not work. Animal cruelty is not the solution.

Please sign this petition and let Campbell Newman know that you do not support this blatant act of animal cruelty. Our politicians work for US, not the other way around.

Use your voice, and save a life.
