The passengers of the first Flogging Molly Salty Dog Cruise (2015) had the unique opportunity to see the fiddler for Mickey Rickshaw perform throughout the cruise.  Whether onstage with Dave King, on Deck 7 with Frank Turner, on the back of the ship with Authority Zero, or even in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Jake Sullivan definitely made an impression on not only the passengers, but to the performers as well!

Our private "Flogging Molly Cruise Shipmates" Facebook group of over 700 passengers fell in love with Jake's talent, and are even more excited about his band, Mickey Rickshaw.  Located in Boston, MA, Mickey Rickshaw is an eight piece band that incorporates traditional instruments such as the tin whistle, bagpipes, mandolin, and fiddle in addition to the standard four piece band (drums, lead guitar, bass, rhythm guitar).  Although there are eight members in this "Boston Pillage Punk" band, they have a cohesive and dynamic sound that would be a great fit for the 2016 cruise!

Mickey Rickshaw has a strong base in punk rock that incorporates Irish and Celtic instruments.  Bagpipe player Shane Welch was influenced by his grandfather, who also played the bagpipes.  And since half of his family is from Ireland, lead singer Mike Rivkees always had Irish and Celtic music in his life.  Jake is inspired by Bridget Regan when playing his fiddle (even in the ocean off of Great Stirrup Cay!).  Everyone in the band came from a punk background, and their music is heavily influenced by travel.  Mike spent time living in Costa Rica, Fiji, Italy, and Australia and their new album “No Heaven for Heroes” definitely captures this wanderlust spirit.

“It’s about picking up and leaving your loved ones, your job, and just going and living in a different part of the world,” says Mike.  “We write songs about where your home is, and it’s only when you are away from home you then realize that you have a home.” Their songs also have a nautical feel because Mike grew up on Newport Shipyard in Rhode Island and has strong memories of sailing.  “You can never swim across an ocean, and home is never home until you’re gone.”

We want Jake's band, Mickey Rickshaw, to entertain us!  The majority of us are booking our cabins for the 2016 Salty Dog Cruise and we think their unique sound and energy will be a great addition!  Each signature shows the overwhelming support from Flogging Molly fans and future cruise passengers - that Mickey Rickshaw has the talent, draw, and style to perform on the cruise.  But don't take our word for it – watch the video above and hear for yourself!
