Rehome FCHS Calf

The Issue

Floyd County High School is keeping a calf and it has no place to hide from predators or the weather. The shelter provided is a lean to built from pallets and plywood and not waterproof or predator proof. The calf is not in a natural herd and is missing out on much needed socialization with it's own kind.

The young calf is fed grains in a plastic foot soaking tub and her water source is a plastic bucket that could be toppled or frozen,  leaving the calf without water. The small area is not suitable for grazing. The ag teacher told me she is too young to eat hay, however, I've seen her munching on grass, roots and leaves.

We are both concerned for this animals well being and safety since our area here in Floyd County, Virginia is abundant in natural predators including, wild dogs, coyotes, bear, wild cats and vultures.

We are heartbroken for her unfulfilled need for companionship. She moos when school children are going into school and when we visit her she moos when we leave.

Also, where she is kept, she is exposed to the exhaust of every bus that goes by. They have to come to an almost complete stop to make a turn in front of her pen, filling the air with poisonous engine exhaust as they accelerate. Twice a day. Can you imagine?!

We are asking that the school board make a responsible decision to discontinue using this animal for teaching vaccinations and other agricultural practices and return this animal to it's herd on the cattle farm as we believe it needs proper shelter, access to potable water, pasture land and companionship of it's own kind. We demand that the exploitation of this animal cease immediately. Liberty and justice for all.

In cooperation with PETA, I hereby amend this petition asking that the calf be sent to an accredited sanctuary rather than to a farm to likely be raised for slaughter or hurt by mature cows as it tries to integrate into an established herd. A sanctuary would be able to give her the daily attention necessary to integrate safely.
