Nurses Need Congress To Address Florida Board of Nursing Civil Rights and Ethics Issues
The Issue
My name is John B Lester and I have been a RN for 13 years. My license was suspended by the Florida Board of Nursing in June 2015 without any notification or due process. Before my case could be considered for review I was ordered to comply with certain requirements by from the nursing board. These requirements included psychiatric evaluations, laboratory test, and attorney fees before any formal charges were filed against my license During this time I was denied the right to work. My case was denied the rights to be processed within reasonable time as it took nearly ten months before my hearing on April 6, 2016. The Board of Nursing reinstated my license and agreed there was no just cause for my suspension. Despite the fact they are requiring me to complete one year with an impaired practitioner program that doesn’t meet proper criteria within the Florida Nurse Practice Act. This intervention program known as IPN does not even have a physical address. Most nurses are being required to participate in this program for minimum of 5 years regardless of their circumstances. As a result, nurses, including myself are unable to work or provided for their families unless they agree to these terms. What began as the nursing boards attempt to ensure the safety of the public has turned into a blatant breach of ethics and civil rights. The very same rights the Nurse Practice Act encourages their nurses protect as patient advocates. I ask that anyone reading this will sign this petition and help make the Florida Senate and Congress aware of the wrongfulness their state agencies are performing and the need to correct it.
