Emma Paliotta started this petition to Florida State Senate and

One of the main causes of coral bleaching (and eventually death) is due to pollutants that increase ocean acidity and put coral under stress. Research shows that chemical compounds commonly found in sunscreens (such as oxybenzone and octinoxate) can trigger corals to release their symbiotic zooxanthellae. Without their zooxanthellae, corals have a high risk of death.

  • Without corals, not only will the ecosystem suffer, but the economic income of Florida will too- as the Florida Coral reef tract has an estimated $8.5 billion asset value.
  • Coral reefs provide a buffer for the shore and serve as a natural barrier during storms.
  • The 360 mile long Florida Reef Tract is the worlds third largest barrier reef. Not only does it provide shelter and habitat for many marine organisms, they are the source of nitrogen and other nutrients needed for a stable marine ecosystem.

The purpose of this petition is to seek the help of Florida Lawmakers to ban the use of toxic sunscreens sold in the Florida Keys, and promote the sale of only reef safe sunscreens. Hawaii has already banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate as of May 2018, which will be taking effect in 2021. Help the Florida Coral Reefs by signing this petition. Many people can make a great difference.
