The Issue

Florida’s Sunshine Law exists for a reason: to protect the public’s right to know what our officials are doing with our land, our money, and our trust. But Attorney General James Uthmeier is using his office to do the opposite.

Instead of defending the law, Uthmeier is appealing a court ruling that blocked a secretive land deal — one that would give away prime Miami property for free to Donald Trump’s presidential library. The meeting where this was approved wasn’t properly noticed to the public. There was no clear mention of the library or the exact land involved until it was too late for people to speak up.

When a judge stepped in and said the process likely violated our open government laws, Uthmeier didn’t fix the problem — he doubled down. He’s now using state resources to try to narrow the scope of the Sunshine Law, opening the door for more secrecy and fewer public protections across Florida.

That’s not what the Attorney General is supposed to do. According to Uthmeier’s own website, his job is to safeguard transparency — not gut it.

Floridians deserve better. We deserve leaders who respect the law, not those who twist it to protect political allies. Uthmeier’s actions don’t just betray public trust — they risk setting legal precedent that could weaken transparency across every city, county, and college in the state.

We call on Attorney General James Uthmeier to immediately withdraw his appeal in the Trump library case and stop using the power of his office to undermine open government in Florida.
