Help Florida get a State Amphibian, preferably the Southern Toad
Help Florida get a State Amphibian, preferably the Southern Toad because it is easily visible and heard by many residents
Almost 3 years ago at age 9, I started a service project that has grown into a non-profit organization called Conserve It Forward, Inc. My main focus area is helping the environment through amphibian conservation, specifically frogs. I often do frog booths, presentations, lead field trip groups, frog hikes and more, including running the Tampa area Save the Frogs Day event.
Florida has 31 species of frogs, more than many other states, yet we do not have a State Amphibian. One reason I work with frogs is because they are indicator species. The challenges they face represent the same challenges that both our local and global environment face. What I share with people are the many small actions we can do to help save frogs, which means we are helping save the environment. Having a Florida State Amphibian, especially the Southern Toad (Anaxyrus terrestris) that so many people can easily see and hear, would help everyone know that Florida cares about our awesome amphibian population, its conservation, and our environment!
I tried to help in 2011 and 2012 with getting a Florida State Amphibian, but I did not get any response from the Legislators who were working on it. I know they are very busy, so I have kept trying! This year, I got a response from our new Representative Mark Danish in my district, and my goal is to get a proposal to him later in 2013, in hopes that he will be able to help us get a Florida State Amphibian in the 2014 season!
Some people have worked really hard to get a Florida State Amphibian for years, and they have raised a lot of awareness. I don't know why it hasn't happened yet, but I believe the more support and signatures we get, the better chance we have! We have to keep trying!
I would love for us to all work together to get as many signatures as possible! You can sign here online, or at my booths or events in person. I will also have petitions on my website at ConserveItForward.org so that you can print petitions and collect even more signatures.
