Since COVID, Florida home values have soared—some tripling in price, far outpacing income growth and the national average. At the same time, median property tax bills have jumped nearly 50%, with cities like Tampa and Jacksonville seeing increases closer to 60%. Yet the $50,000 homestead exemption hasn’t budged, and residents are receiving no additional services or relief in return for their dramatically higher tax payments. For many Floridians, property taxes have become one of their largest expenses—and that's simply not sustainable.

New homeowners, especially those who bought during peak inflation, are now facing tax bills two to three times higher than their neighbors for the same homes—simply because of when they moved. That makes for some awkward conversations at neighborhood BBQs. Families with children, needing just a few extra bedrooms, are also being disproportionately affected—especially if they moved or completed delayed builds impacted by COVID or Hurricane Ian.

We believe there’s a better path forward—one that still funds essential public services without forcing Florida families to rent their homes from the government every year. It’s time for a fair, balanced approach to property taxation—one that ensures government needs are met without stifling the people it serves.
