Florida Must Ban Cruel Battery Cages for Egg-Laying Hens

The Issue

Right now in Florida, millions of egg-laying hens are suffering in cramped, filthy cages—each bird confined to less space than a single sheet of paper. These battery cages deny hens even the most basic natural behaviors like spreading their wings, nesting, or dustbathing. It’s a life of frustration, pain, and unrelenting confinement—and Florida is falling behind.

Eleven U.S. states, including Arizona and Colorado, have already banned cages for egg-laying hens. They’ve recognized what scientists and the public already know: battery cages are inherently cruel. Even Nobel Prize–winning animal behaviorist Dr. Konrad Lorenz called them “the worst torture” a hen can endure.

Florida’s laws say nothing about this suffering. While cage-free doesn't mean cruelty-free, research shows cage-free systems do offer hens a chance to walk, perch, lay eggs in nests, and express natural behavior. That’s a meaningful difference. No animal deserves to live every moment of its life without enough space to even turn around.

Florida consumers are demanding better—and so are voters across the political spectrum. People of all backgrounds agree that animals should be treated with decency and compassion.

We’re calling on the Florida Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis to pass legislation that bans the use of cages for egg-laying hens statewide. We urge you to follow the lead of other states and bring Florida in line with modern animal welfare standards.

No more excuses. No more hidden cruelty. It’s time for Florida to reject the worst forms of animal abuse in industrial farming.

Sign this petition to demand that Florida ban battery cages for hens. Let’s move toward a more humane future—one where compassion is part of the law.
