T'Shawn Barry started this petition to Florida International University and

It started off like this:

I would like to cancel my housing for Spring 2021, due to having only remote classes in the Spring and it not being safe for me to go to Miami, this semester and I would like to cancel, COVID 19 is less apparent in my current city and I will not put myself in danger to go to Miami and get sick. My father died because of COVID-19 and my family now needs my help more than ever. My mum is an essential worker that due to the pandemic is struggling to make ends meet and needs my help to support the family. I only took housing for Spring because I didn't know if there were remote classes, unfortunately, I will not be able to return to FIU until my life returns to normalcy and my family is outside danger of becoming homeless. Thank you for your understanding.

Their response:

We have listed the criteria for an approved cancellation:

 (1) The student will not be enrolled in classes for the given semester,

 (2) The student withdraws from FIU;

 (3) The student participates in an academic program that requires residence outside the Miami-Dade/Broward area;

 (4) The student participates in an FIU sponsored and approved study abroad program;

 (5) The student graduates;

 (6) The student gets married after signing the Agreement;

 (7) The student has an emergency medical condition that was not pre-existing when the Agreement was signed

 (8) The student receives military orders  duty.

If the cancellation is approved, there is a $200 cancellation fee, however if your reason is none of the above listed, then you must exercise the buyout option which has a fee associated with it of $2,000.

My response:

I can not afford the buyout, all my classes are remote so it makes no sense to come to campus at all. Why would I put myself in danger to take a class in a room. I will be staying at home in Sarasota which is a billion times safer than Miami. You are trying to force me to pay $2000 for a place that makes no sense for me to logically stay, I was unaware that my classes would be all remote, so it is not necessary that I stay on campus in a city with a high population, to sit in my room and take classes. FIU started the enrollment process knowing that people would take precaution and expect to be on campus only to have mostly online or remote classes, that people would choose and then have them pay a buyout even though the beginning of spring is January. That is unfair, and makes no sense. I have a family to support and unfortunately I can't come to Miami, but you are telling me FIU would rather lose a student who would be paying tuition than to release him from an unfair contract during a time of unrest and a global pandemic.

Everyone, this is insane. It is not the status quo. It is not normal times, it doesn't make sense for any student who finds out all their classes are remote to come and live on campus, and stay in a room instead of staying at home for no charge. Help us change this unjust and unfair situation that many people are finding themselves in.
