Florida House: Stop PCB CIS 13-01

Florida House: Stop PCB CIS 13-01
The Issue
PCB CIS 13-01 proposes that any schools which are closed be offered to charter schools, and that any at less than 50% capacity provide space to charter schools - all at NO COST to the charter school. In addition, it proposes that the school district pay to maintain the building at NO COST to the charter school. First, since some charter schools are operated by for-profit companies, enacting this legislation could result in a gross misuse of school district tax funds to offset costs and increase revenue for a for-profit industry - which is absolutely not the purpose of taxes or public facilities. In addition, school districts which are facing budget crises need to have options to resolve financial difficulties. This bill effectively removes those options, which could force school districts into insolvency if they are forced to maintain charter schools' facilities at the expense of the quality of education for children in Florida's public schools. As a concerned parent, Florida citizen, and as a taxpayer, I strongly oppose this proposed bill, and I urge you to do the same. You can, and must, do better by Florida's childen than to mortgage their futures to a for-profit charter school industry.
