Reintroduce the red wolf into Everglades National Park
The Issue
The red wolf is a rare species of canid that originally ranged from Southeastern Canada to Florida out west to Texas. However, due to over hunting and bounties placed on the species, the red wolf went extinct in Florida in the early 1900s. By the 1980s, the red wolf became extinct in the wild. However, a reintroduction program in North Carolina has recreated a wild population of now 100 red wolves. But, there is still a very large problem. The Red Wolf Recovery Program may soon end, spelling the extinction of the red wolf. The reason being the fact that much of the area that the wild red wolves roam is private property. Many people hunt on these lands, and they claim red wolves are decreasing the deer population there. Many hunters are protesting the program. Besides the chance of the recovery program ending, red wolves are facing another large problem: t hey are mating with Coyotes and producing coy-wolfs, which could spell the end of the species. But there is still hope for the red wolf. Everglad, National Park in Florida provides suitable habitat for red wolves. With 1.5 million acres, there would be less confrontations with people. Also, the red wolf's return to the Everglades may help other native species. The Burmese python is an invasive python species threatening the Everglades. They are decreasing the population of many native species. Part of the red wolf's diet are snakes and eggs. Therefore, the red wolf may help manage this threat to the Everglades. Besides this, the red wolf would aid in boosting Florida tourism and attention to other threatened and endangered Florida creatures, such as Florida manatees, gopher tortoises and Florida panthers. Please help bring this creature back to Florida. Mankind's greatest sin is it's treatment of the environment. Let's make right our wrongs by reintroducing the red wolf in Florida. Who knows, maybe this petition to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission may bring the red wolf back to your state and you might one day hear the tranquil howl of the noble red wolf.
