All Florida licensed professionals are required to satisfy continuing education (CE) requirements to allow for licenses renewal every 2 years.

Each board for each profession is responsible for setting guidelines and format of such continuing education. Most Florida licensing boards for health professions have allowed providers to satisfy requirements through online lectures, or self directed learning.

The Florida board of Optometry does not currently allow online CE for the most part.

In light of the current coronavirus crisis, we ask than the Florida Board Of Optometry consider changing its rule for the following reasons:

1. Economical Impact:

Following orders of the Florida Governor, most doctors of optometry had to stop seing patients for an extended period of time . Those professionals should not take more days off to attend in person lectures when this can be done at home.

Attending in person lectures is associated with travel and lodging costs.

2. Public health impact:

Many medical professionals across the United States have adopted an online format for their continuing education without any adverse impact on the learning objectives. As an aside, many accredited degree granting institutions have moved to a fully online format.

Given the requirements for social distancing, asking medical professionals to gather inside a lecture hall for days would be irresponsible. Most Florida schools, colleges have cancelled their in person lectures for the time being.

Therefore, we kindly ask the the Florida Board of Optometry reconsiders its requirement for mandatory in person continuing education hours and move to an online format.
