.@Flipkart: Stop Selling Publications that Promote Gender Biased Sex Selection

The Issue

Sex selection publications are being sold on Flipkart! In India the practice of sex selection results in the loss of about 6 lakh girls every year. Indian law prohibits all forms of advertisements that promote sex selection. Yet these publications are available for purchase on Flipkart.

If Flipkart removes the material we will send a strong message to all online retailers that products promoting sex selection will not be tolerated. Sign this petition and make Flipkart remove the offending publications.

In a society where sons are favoured and daughters are seen as a burden, information promoting sex selection fuels the illegal practice of sex selection.

Recently, the Supreme Court of India has ordered online search engines to remove all advertisements on sex-selection techniques. It is time for Indians to take action and stand up for the Girl Child. The Government has launched the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign to promote the value of the Girl Child.

There are only 918 girls for every 1000 boys in the 0-6 age group in India. In some states of the country the numbers are even worse. Gender imbalance can lead to increased violence against women, rape, abduction, trafficking and an overall rise in crime.

Flipkart is a leading e-commerce website that cares about what its customers think. If thousands of us sign this petition we can show Flipkart that Indians won’t tolerate the sale of sex-selection publications. We urge you to sign this petition and make Flipkart remove publications promoting the regressive practice of sex selection.
