Fix Women’s healthcare and hygiene in jail

Fix Women’s healthcare and hygiene in jail

The Issue

Women’s healthcare in jail shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be a right. Women shouldn’t have to sit in their own blood, or go without clean pads, tampons, or even a simple toothbrush. They shouldn’t be shackled when giving birth or be forced to deal with their health problems alone. No one deserves that—especially not women who are already struggling. These women deserve basic human dignity, like access to clean clothes, proper hygiene products, safe showers, and the medical care they need when they’re sick or in pain. They also deserve access to accommodations for special diets and health needs, like gluten-free, lactose-free, or diabetic-friendly food. It’s outrageous that some women are denied necessary things like braces, contacts, or glasses. I understand that women in jail may have done bad things, but that doesn’t mean they should be treated like animals. They’re human beings, and their health and well-being should be treated with respect. We need to change this and demand better healthcare, hygiene, and rights for women in jail.
