The Issue

Traffic congestion, escalating fuel and public transport costs, and air pollution continue to choke our towns and cities. Everyday commuters need practical, affordable, and clean alternatives for short-to-medium journeys, and light electric vehicles (e-bikes and e-scooters) are the clear answer.

Yet, outdated legislation and inadequate infrastructure continue to hold them back. While electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs) are legal, privately owned e-scooters remain banned from roads and cycle paths across the UK—forcing commuters either into gridlocked car traffic or leaving hundreds of thousands trapped in a legal grey area.

Why E-Scooters & E-Bikes Make Sense for Daily Commuting:

  • Beat the Gridlock: Light micromobility easily cuts through rush-hour traffic, dramatically shortening daily commute times and reducing urban bottlenecks.
  • Cost of Living Relief: Charging an e-bike or e-scooter costs pennies compared to rising petrol prices, parking fees, congestion charges, or expensive monthly transit passes.
  • Accessibility & Portability: They open up flexible, low-effort active travel to people who cannot commute on a traditional pedal bicycle, integrating seamlessly with existing public transport for "first and last mile" trips.

The Environmental Impact:

  • Zero Tailpipe Emissions: Replacing short car trips with electric micromobility immediately removes harmful particulate matter and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from residential streets and city centres.
  • Decarbonisation: Over 60% of short urban car journeys can be comfortably covered by an e-bike or scooter, drastically cutting the carbon footprint of daily commuting.
  • Reduced Street Clutter: They take up a fraction of the road and parking space occupied by multi-tonne petrol and diesel cars, creating cleaner, quieter, and more livable urban communities.

What We Are Calling For:

  1. Clear Legalisation and Regulation: Introduce sensible standards for privately owned e-scooters—including vehicle speed caps (e.g. 15.5 mph), lighting requirements, and age restrictions—bringing the UK in line with European safety models.
  2. Dedicated Infrastructure: Expand protected, segregated cycleways that safely separate micromobility users from both high-speed vehicle traffic and pedestrian footpaths.
  3. Incentives for Green Commuting: Expand commuter schemes, secure public parking, and low-cost charging facilities to encourage everyday workers to leave their cars at home.

Sign this petition to urge policymakers to modernise the law, invest in green lanes, and make clean, affordable micromobility a standard part of our everyday transport network!
