The Issue

Thousands of UCF students are facing a financial aid crisis, and relying on tuition deferment deadlines does not solve the underlying problem.

Despite students completing and submitting FAFSA documentation months in advance, a vast portion of the student body arrived for the first week of class with zero processed financial aid available—and many have yet to receive their initial award packages at all. Furthermore, Direct Stafford Loans remain locked in system limbo under a "Needs Review" status requiring manual supervisor overrides that are not happening fast enough.

While UCF automatically grants a standard financial aid tuition deferment date through November 6th, this deadline extension is an emergency band-aid, not a resolution. Pushing back tuition payment deadlines protects the university’s metrics and keeps students enrolled, but it does zero to assist students who rely on scheduled aid disbursements right now to pay rent, buy required course materials, and afford daily living expenses.

Holding Executive Leadership Accountable

We want to make one thing unequivocally clear: this petition is not directed at the frontline staff working in the financial aid office. Frontline advisers and administrative workers are underpaid, severely overworked, and doing their best to handle a flood of desperate inquiries without adequate resources or support. We stand with these workers. Our focus is strictly on executive leadership and university administration, whose high-level operational decisions created this bottleneck and left both students and frontline staff to suffer the consequences.

This operational breakdown is the direct result of internal executive mismanagement:

1. A Self-Imposed Summer Processing Pause: Executive management chose to throttle or halt financial aid processing over the summer—the primary window available to clear bottlenecks before more than 60,000 students returned to campus.

2. Uncoordinated System Overhauls: Rolling out an overhauled myUCF portal system during an active processing backlog left students and frontline workers struggling with bugged user interfaces, unresolvable system flags, and a total lack of operational transparency.

3. Misleading Scapegoating: High-level institutional messaging continually attributes these failures to year-old federal legislation, despite neighboring Florida colleges operating under the exact same federal regulations while successfully disbursing aid on time.

As one of the largest universities in the nation, UCF leadership must be held accountable for treating its student body and frontline staff with this level of administrative negligence.

Our Demands

1. Immediate Manual Clearances & Package Issuance: Immediately issue missing award packages and clear all "Needs Review" supervisor queues on Stafford Loans so students can accept their aid without further delay.

2. Emergency Relief & Financial Deferments: Issue immediate short-term emergency advances or guaranteed zero-penalty financial deferments to any student impacted by internal university processing delays.

3. Leadership Accountability & Independent Audit: Conduct a full, transparent audit into the executive decision-making behind the summer processing pause and portal rollout, provide proper staffing resources to frontline workers, and hold the upper leadership of the Office of Student Financial Assistance accountable for this systemic breakdown.

Sign this petition to demand that UCF Executive Administration stop making excuses, stop relying on standard deferment dates, support their staff, and release student financial aid immediately.
