(09-07-2023) The dress code at West Rutland High School is degrading, oppressive, and simply unfair. Multiple high school students were dress coded and/or talked to about their outfits today. Some of these students were not in violation of the dress code, according to page 27 of the WRS Student Handbook. I, along with the majority of my classmates, believe that our stomachs and shoulders are not distracting, and we should be able to wear tank tops and shorts, especially in this extreme heat. West Rutland School has bigger problems they need to worry about compared to our torsos showing. If our shoulders and stomachs are distracting to teachers or other students, that is something that needs to be addressed and dealt with properly. In addition to this, I’ve seen some of the girls wear the same tank tops as the boys, and it be absolutely fine, but the boys are the ones in trouble. This is completely inequitable and needs to be fixed. Notably, I’ve seen teachers wearing tank tops and short dresses, the same as some students who get in trouble. Let’s do better.
