The Issue

As a student at Austin High School, I've spent countless hours in the performing arts center preparing for my  musical and other performances. Unfortunately, the current condition of the facility is far from ideal. The air conditioning system is often non-functional, and the presence of mold is a persistent issue, creating an unhealthy and unsafe environment for everyone who uses it.

The performing arts center is not just a place for artistic expression; it is a critical learning environment where students hone their skills, collaborate with peers, and build lasting memories. A faulty air conditioning system makes it unbearable to spend extended periods inside, especially during the warmer months. This discomfort not only affects our performance but also our health and well-being.

Furthermore, the mold problem presents a significant health risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), exposure to mold can cause a range of health issues, from mild allergic reactions to severe respiratory problems, especially in individuals with preexisting conditions or sensitivities. For students and staff who spend substantial time in this environment, the risks are simply unacceptable.

The school administration, along with the district, has a responsibility to provide a safe, clean, and conducive learning environment. We propose a comprehensive inspection. This includes immediate mold remediation, air quality tests, and a complete repair or replacement of the air conditioning system to ensure it functions properly.

Additionally the preforming arts center is being cooled by a backup generator outside. That is the only thing keeping the preforming arts center cool. My theater teacher told me that the Ac system was supposed to be done and working before school started. Now it has been 9 week without any update from her because she has asked but no one has answered her yet.

Fixing these issues not only enhances our education experience but also shows commitment to student health and safety. It is crucial for the administration to prioritize these repairs, allocate necessary funding, and work with qualified contractors to address the situation promptly.

Also some of the seats in the preforming arts center are broken, and some have exposed nails. This has already hurt a student by scarping them in the back with an old nail. So we should as students should not gets subjected to this.

We, the students, parents, faculty, and community members, urge Austin High School and the Austin Independent School District to take immediate action to rectify these pressing issues. Let’s ensure that our performing arts center becomes a safe, welcoming, and fully functional facility.
