Fix the deadly Minnie Park Intersection of KY 680 and KY 122
The Issue
Design problems at the new intersection of KY 680 and KY 122 at the Minnie Park in Floyd County are killing people. That area is not safe and must be fixed. Many of us have witnessed accidents there. Some of us have been affected ourselves or had loved ones involved in accidents.
As soon as possible, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet should implement short-term measures that could save lives, such as:
- Flashing lights.
- Warning signs.
- A reduced speed zone near the intersection.
- Rumble strips.
- Sign, signal, or timing changes to the southward turn lanes from KY 680 to KY 122.
While short-term fixes are put in place, the intersection and immediate area must be studied and redesigned. The new plan should be sure to interview local people and take into account patterns of actual use including:
- Ballgames and other busy times at the park, when cars park up and down KY 122 on the shoulders and pedestrians walk across the streets.
- Heavy traffic times on KY 680 such as when Floyd County Central High School lets out for the day.
- Car and pedestrian traffic to the businesses near the intersection.
- Pedestrian traffic at the KY 680 KY 122 intersection itself, especially at busy traffic times.
The National Highway and Transportation Administration (NHTSA) has only published statistics for Floyd County through 2024 via Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool (FIRST). Because this is a new intersection, that limits how useful the NHTSA data is. If you have information about an accident that isn't included here, please share it.

Terry Samons was killed in a three-vehicle crash. Other injuries were reported.
Other documented accidents
The Kentucky State Police publish a database that makes it possible to map 31 accidents that have occurred at the intersection since its construction. For some of those reports we also have stories.
