Fix the Crisis in Our Skies—Expand Air Traffic Controller Training Now

The Issue

Every time we step onto a plane, we put our lives in the hands of not just pilots, but also the air traffic controllers guiding them safely through increasingly crowded skies. Yet right now, the U.S. is facing a dangerous shortage of these critical professionals, and we’re all feeling the consequences: flight delays, forced overtime, and terrifying near-miss incidents.

The FAA is short thousands of certified controllers, and while hiring efforts have increased, the process is too slow and the pipeline too limited. It can take years to fully train a controller, but we don’t have years to spare. Controllers are burning out under grueling schedules, and travelers are paying the price with canceled plans and compromised safety.

We call on Congress and the FAA to act immediately:

  • Expand and modernize air traffic controller training programs
  • Increase funding for the FAA Academy and fast-track military and college-trained candidates
  • Provide meaningful support to retain experienced staff

This is not just about fixing delays—it’s about protecting lives. Let’s invest in the people who keep our skies safe.
