Friends of Guild Park Petition Gains More Media Attention
The Toronto Star (Dec. 23, 2022) put a city-wide spotlight on the call by Friends of Guild Park to “fix the broken promises” at Guild Park’s historic Guild Inn.
The article published in Canada's largest newspaper, described how the City of Toronto, which is responsible for operating most of the public park at the Scarborough Bluffs, specified the inn would include a restaurant and various public services when it was restored and reopened “after nearly a generation of neglect.”
This media attention is an excellent opportunity to widely share this petition.
The article covers many details of the lease and operating agreement negotiated between the City of Toronto and Dynamic Hospitality & Entertainment, the private company that restored the old Guild Inn and now operates the premises as the Guild Inn Estate.
The Star’s City Hall reporter, Ben Spurr, interviewed Friends of Guild Park President, John P. Mason, Sam D’Uva, owner of Dynamic, and City Councillor Paul Ainslie
The Star article states that “city documents show Dynamic is specifically obligated to provide public access to an on-site restaurant and the Guild’s city-owned art collection and to offer community centre space that can be rented at affordable city-set rates.”
Officials from the City and the business partner told the Star that nothing really needs to change at the former Guild Inn premises. Neither spokesperson saw any need to reopen the promised restaurant on-site - even though it's legally required.
Adding more petition supporters will add more strengthen to the volunteer campaign to counter these officials' claims.
