Background:

The permanent bathrooms at Big Rec in San Francisco have been closed for over a year due to “structural issues.” In their place, the City has only provided temporary portapotties. Big Rec is one of our most used parks — serving families, children, youth sports teams, seniors, and everyday neighbors.

The Problem:

Relying on portapotties for years is not safe, dignified, or accessible. It limits use for families with children, people with disabilities, and older adults. Our community deserves basic public infrastructure that is clean, permanent, and accessible.

Our Demand:

We call on the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department and the Board of Supervisors to:

1. Publicly explain the “structural issue” that has kept the bathrooms closed.
2. Provide a clear timeline for repairs or replacement.
3. Prioritize funding to reopen the permanent restrooms at Big Rec.

Why It Matters:

Big Rec is a vital public space. Leaving the bathrooms locked for years undermines equity, safety, and accessibility in our parks. With bond money and capital projects being planned citywide, fixing Big Rec must be a priority.
