The Issue

I’ve been dealing with constant pain and discomfort due to chronic tonsillitis, and it has reached a point where I can barely eat solid food without risking choking. All I want is to have a tonsillectomy—a straightforward procedure that could drastically improve my quality of life—but despite my persistent attempts, no doctor is willing to take my condition seriously enough to offer the surgery.

This issue is not unique to me. Many individuals in rural Oregon face similar struggles with limited access to ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists. The distance to urban centers where these specialists are located, often results in prolonged suffering and, in cases like mine, a significant decrease in quality of life. Chronic tonsillitis is not just a discomfort; it is a serious condition that can lead to frequent infections, difficulty breathing, and other complications if not properly treated.

According to the Oregon Health Statistics unit, more than 15% of Oregonians live in rural areas, and accessing specialized healthcare services is a growing concern. Lack of local specialists means that many must travel long distances, incur additional costs, and endure lengthy waiting periods for necessary medical interventions.

We call upon the Oregon Health Authority to address this urgent healthcare gap by expanding ENT services specifically tailored for rural areas. This expansion could include the establishment of satellite clinics, telemedicine consultations, and partnerships with mobile healthcare units to ensure that all Oregonians, regardless of their geographic location, have timely access to necessary medical procedures such as tonsillectomies.

By taking immediate action to improve ENT access, we can provide relief for countless individuals who, like myself, should not have to 'beg' for a standard medical procedure. Strengthening healthcare services in rural Oregon will not only improve physical health outcomes but also mental and emotional well-being for patients who feel neglected by the current system.

Please sign this petition to urge the Oregon Health Authority to prioritize expanding ENT access for rural Oregonians suffering from chronic tonsillitis. Let’s ensure that no more individuals have to endure prolonged suffering or risk their lives due to inaccessible medical care.
