Fix ICE Detention Conditions And Stop Expanding Arizona Facilities
The Issue
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) just signed a $1.2 billion contract to build a new secure housing unit at the Florence Service Processing Center in Arizona — one of five massive detention expansion deals worth $7.3 billion nationwide. But the government hasn't fixed the problems already happening inside its Arizona facilities.
This summer, ICE confirmed a measles outbreak at the very facility DHS now wants to expand. And U.S. Rep. Adelita Grijalva says people currently held in ICE custody in Arizona "can't get clean drinking water, edible food, or adequate medical care," according to a statement from her office. She added that "DHS should be fixing these appalling conditions — not preparing to funnel another $1.2 billion in taxpayer dollars into expanding Trump's cruel mass detention and deportation machine."
DHS didn't even notify the Town of Florence before moving forward with this expansion. Meanwhile, a separate $313 million plan to convert a warehouse in Surprise, Arizona into another detention site is already tied up in a state lawsuit over environmental and immigration law violations — and residents there have shown up to oppose it.
Building more beds does nothing to solve the water, food, and medical care failures already documented in Arizona's detention system. Before another dollar goes toward expansion, DHS should be required to fix the conditions people are living in right now.
Sign this petition to demand DHS halt new detention construction in Arizona until basic health and safety standards are met.
