Fix Dangerous Traffic Hazard in Mentone

Fix Dangerous Traffic Hazard in Mentone
The issue
Residents along the intersection of Balcombe Road, Nepean Highway and Warrigal Road are living in daily danger.
Simply entering or exiting their homes has become a nightmare.
Poorly designed access points leave residents without a safe or legal way to drive in or out. Instead, they are forced into these unsafe and impossible choices:
- Funnelling traffic past Mentone Primary School and St Patrick’s Primary School (two of the most congested and hazardous school zones in the area)
- making reckless manoeuvres such as U-turns or;
- illegally crossing continuous or double lines (both serious breaches under Victorian road rules).
This is not a minor inconvenience, but an accident waiting to happen.
Mentone is home to numerous schools that are choking with traffic during peak hours.
Parents, school children, and families are exposed to life-threatening risks or injuries every single day. Service vehicles and delivery drivers are trapped in the same unsafe conditions, and residents feel like prisoners in their own homes, while local businesses are suffering as customers avoid the chaos.
What should be a safe, family-friendly suburb, has become unliveable during peak times.
This crisis is the direct legacy of poor planning and inadequate road design.
With every new building, the situation escalates.
More cars. More congestion. More risk.
And yet, there is no immediate plan to fix this.
If Kingston City Council and VicRoads do not take action to fix these failures and redesign safe access for residents living along Balcombe Road Service Road and the surrounding area, a serious road tragedy is not just possible — it is inevitable.
The community cannot continue to live like this. Immediate intervention is required to protect the lives of residents, business owners, schoolchildren, and visitors before disaster strikes.
