Dear Senate Governance and Finance Committee Senators,
As a lifelong Democrat and owner of my home-based Montessori pre-school in Palo Alto since 1989, I am asking you to co-sponsor and vote YES on Senate Constitutional Amendment 4 (SCA-4), the bill to fix housing affordability and help mom-daughter businesses to continue in our community.
At age 90, I am still actively teaching at my pre-school with my daughter's family (), and we are affiliated with other Montessori teachers in the community who would like to see SCA-4 pass. I would like SCA-4 to protect my family to continue "the opportunity to teach and watch youngsters graduate from preschool to public school year after year" in our community. In California, current average homes cost at least $1.5M+ (higher in the Peninsula) and high property tax if reassessed at market value (est. property tax at $30K to $60K+ EACH year)!
SCA-4 bill allows the Legislature to fix Prop 19's Death Tax, which was passed narrowly in 2020 after a very deceptive campaign. Voters deserve the chance to consider this question again, this time with full information. Help AFFORDABLE Housing in California and avoid mass exodus of families to out-of-state. Protect families from being forced to sell their home, farm, or business upon a parent’s death. Also protect renters who will be displaced because rental building owners are forced to sell their properties to avoid high taxes arising from Prop 19 mandated reassessments. New property owners are usually developers who will build more expensive homes and rentals to sell and rent at high market rate–making housing affordability worse in California!
Please Vote YES on SCA-4 so that parents who work for decades to pay the mortgage on a home, a rental property or a small business property, could again leave that property to their kids without fear that a reassessment would generate a huge and unaffordable property tax increase that would force the sale of the family home or property (and loss of family businesses). Can we count on you to protect the people and vote YES on SCA-4? Thank you!
Respectfully,
Chair
Representing Montessori School Affiliates
P.S. Prop 19 GUTTED Prop 58/193 and took away the protection of housing for long-time Californians, especially:
• Special needs child who needs to continue living in the house
• A life partner who was not a spouse or registered domestic partner
• A low income child
• A sibling, niece, nephew, parent, etc. who would live in the house
