Dear friends,
It used to be possible under Prop 58 for Californians to leave their homes to their children and grandchildren without an increase in property taxes upon their deaths.
No longer.
Prop 19 narrowly passed last November, and many families are only now learning that it could force family homes to be sold to pay taxes.
With property values at an all-time high in California, reassessment of homes to market rate when they are transferred to children and grandchildren will likely result in higher property taxes and those taxes may be too high to afford.
This is the concern of those in support of a movement to "Reinstate 58," which aims to keep family homes in the family.
They are looking for volunteers to help the cause.
Volunteer signature gatherers are being assembled now. Actual signature gathering won't begin until after Nov. 1, 2021, but the campaign is eager to get the word out and begin to build a broad base of volunteers across the state.
Those who sign up will receive petitions and banners and instructions once the State has issued a Title and Summary for the initiative.
More than 1 million signatures will need to be submitted by April 29, 2022 for the initiative to qualify for the Nov. 2022 ballot.
If you want to help gather signatures to repeal the “Death Tax” or to access the Fact Sheet to share with friends, this is the link posted by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association: https://reinstate58.hjta.org/
All the best,
