The Issue

On July 19, 2025, 22-year-old Marcela Herrera was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Ashland Avenue at Cullerton Street in Pilsen. One year later, this dangerous, five-lane stretch of road remains completely unchanged.

We refuse to wait for another tragedy. We demand that CDOT and Ald. Byron Sygcho Lopez fund and install concrete safety infrastructure at this intersection to protect our neighborhood.

We demand the installation of a Raised Pedestrian Refuge Island: This protected center island will allow pedestrians to only have to cross one direction of traffic at a time. This infrastructure costs roughly $75,000—a small price to pay to protect Pilsen families, seniors, and children.

Sign today to demand that Chicago prioritizes human lives over speed.
