Five On, Five Off: A 10-Day Decimal Week for a Sustainable Future

The Issue

In our fast-paced modern world, achieving a harmonious work-life balance feels increasingly like a distant dream. Traditionally, we have been conditioned to a seven-day week, which often leads to stress, burnout, and inadequate personal time. Imagine a world where time is structured for human potential. Under this decimal reform, every month consists of three 10-day cycles. Within each 10-day cycle, every individual follows a perfectly balanced 5-on/5-off rotation: five days dedicated to professional work followed by five fulfilling days for personal rest. This is not just a dream; it is a feasible solution that I propose to bring about genuine work-life balance, facilitate mental health, inspire creativity, and improve family life for everyone.

This revolutionary concept, known as the decimal reform, envisions a 10-day calendar. Reformatting the workweek to 5 days on and 5 off is key to sustained happiness and productivity. This structure promises not only to alleviate the stress associated with conventional workweeks but also assures full employment opportunities by distributing work more evenly among more people.

Research indicates that reducing workdays increases output, diminishes stress levels, and fosters innovation. Countries experimenting with reduced working hours or shorter weeks have witnessed increases in workers' well-being and productivity. The most cited example is the four-day workweek experiment in Iceland, where productivity remained the same or improved, while workers reported significantly lower stress levels and better-balanced lives.

This is our moment to rethink how we live and work. With a decimal-based calendar, we can foster a society that values the well-being of its people over outdated traditions. A transition to this model would not only usher in an era of unprecedented personal and collective well-being but also bring about a significant shift towards a more humane economy. The benefits are too significant to ignore; it promises not only personal rejuvenation but also societal prosperity.

I urge you to consider the incredible advantages of adopting the decimal reform. We need your support to bring this bold idea to the forefront of economic discourse and legislative agendas. Together, we can advocate for a future where work-life harmony is not an indulgence but a norm. Join me in this journey towards a healthier, more balanced world.

The "Intercalary" Holiday System: Days Outside of Time
A standard solar year of 365 days does not divide evenly into 10-day weeks (leaving 5 days extra, or 6 in a leap year). Rather than forcing these into a work week, we propose they become Universal Festival Days:

Days "Outside the Week": These 5–6 days will not be assigned a weekday (e.g., they are neither a "Day 1" nor a "Day 10"). They exist as a standalone "Year-End Festival" where the entire global rotation pauses for a collective human celebration.

Fixed-Date Stability: In this new system, every date falls on the same weekday every year. If your birthday is on the 5th of a month, it will always be a "Day 5." This allow us to fix holidays like Independence Day or New Year's to specific days that never "wander" into the middle of a work block.

The Rotating Holiday Benefit: For major holidays that fall during a 10-day week:

Group A (on shift) works the holiday but receives "Premium Holiday Pay" or a "Floating Holiday" to use later.
Group B (off shift) enjoys the holiday as part of their 5-day break.
To ensure fairness, these groups swap roles annually, so no worker is stuck working the same holiday two years in a row.

Please sign this petition and help us take a step closer to implementing the decimal reform for a balanced and fulfilling life.
