DEMAND A PUBLICLY-OWNED NATIONAL CARE SERVICE, ALONGSIDE THE NHS

The appalling loss of life from Covid-19 witnessed in our care homes over the last two months is not only a national scandal and an avoidable tragedy which has beset 20,000 families, but it is also a searing indictment of a care system which is fragmented, largely private and run for profit.

The Scottish Socialist Party believes our care services should stand side by side with the NHS and be held in the same high regard.

That has sadly not been the case. The campaign for a fully-funded, tightly-regulated and above all free at the point of need National Care Service is now paramount, following the appalling number of care home deaths.

A publicly-owned National Care Service should also guarantee decent pay, safe conditions, thorough training and full, collective trade union rights for its staff.

As the demand grows for a "new normal” after the COVID-19 pandemic passes, the case for that National Care Service has become an important marker of the type of society we need to build. One which in this case puts the needs of elderly and vulnerable people before private profit.

We, the undersigned, demand urgent action on this by the Scottish and UK governments.
