There is a long-established history of flooding concerns within the community of Darien, CT.  Residents and business owners have experienced 20+ years of repetitive flood related losses.  In 2021, there were 2 significant storms that resulted in residents' lives exposed to considerable risk and property damage likely in the millions.

This is not just a matter of high-water tables or overflowing bodies of water.  Rain is accumulating due to impermeable building materials and existing storm water drainage which is broken or incapable of addressing the necessary volume.  Climate change and increased rainfalls are also contributing factors, and these will not go away.

We ask the Town of Darien to prioritize flood mitigation immediately!  This may be through the improvement and expansion of existing storm water infrastructure, restoration of available natural resources like floodplains or streams, and/or more mindful development practices, among other potential solutions.  But action is needed immediately, not in 20 years!  Without immediate action, many Darien homes will disappear or remain uninhabitable.  Some are already abandoned due to irreparable damage.

We urge residents who have experienced flooding to please speak up!  Together we can improve and protect our community!

Also, if you'd like to do more and share your personal experience, please consider attending the Board of Selectmen meeting on Monday September 20, 2021 at 7pm.
