Etienne Marais started this petition to First National Bank and

I am still paying off the bond on my home. A heavy thunder storm has caused the roof of my home to collapse. The insurance company refused to pay out, because the structure was apparently "not according to building standards".

When I bought the house 13 years ago, the bond-holding bank (FNB) appointed the insurers (Outsurance). I had no choice in the matter. The insurance company does not verify whether an insured structure is up to building standard. The bank does not inspect the home for structural defects. They both avoid responsibility for checking that the property is up to standard, and now I am left with the extensive damages (R 135 000).

I am not a structural engineer, and neither are most home-owners. How are we supposed to recognise substandard workmanship on our homes, when we buy it? In my case it was substandard welding to one of the roof beams that caused the roof to cave in.

As the bank is still the official owner of my home and the bond is only halfway paid off, they should take responsibility for the defective home they sold me. It is their investment, after all. If I cannot afford the repairs and the house is left roofless, their investment suffers, as I am.

I therefore petition the bank to pay for the reparations so that I can have a roof over my head again.
