Subject: Preservation of the Traditional Fall Heritage Festival Fireworks Display at Slater Park
Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
As residents and community stakeholders of Pawtucket, we are writing to strongly advocate for keeping the Fall Heritage Festival fireworks display at its traditional location in Slater Park. Relocating this beloved community tradition presents significant logistical, financial, and accessibility challenges that warrant careful reconsideration.
We respectfully ask that you evaluate the following key public safety and community concerns before making a final decision:
Public Safety and Pedestrian Traffic: Splitting the festival and the fireworks across two separate venues creates severe pedestrian congestion as large crowds attempt to travel between locations. Managing two distinct event zones drastically increases the risk of crowd control issues and compromises overall public safety.
Fiscal Responsibility: Spreading operations across multiple sites introduces redundant logistical expenses. At a time when municipal budgets are already tightly stretched, supporting a dual-venue layout places an unnecessary financial burden on the city.
Accessibility for Individuals with Disabilities: Moving the fireworks display away from the main festival grounds creates an unfair barrier for elderly residents and individuals with disabilities. Expecting disabled community members to navigate travel between separate venues just to enjoy the complete festival experience is unreasonable and inaccessible.
Event Experience and Stress: Splitting the schedule forces attendees to rush between locations to catch all aspects of the celebration, turning what should be a relaxing community tradition into a stressful experience for families and visitors alike.
Slater Park has long served as a safe, central, and accessible home for the Fall Heritage Festival and its crowning fireworks display. We urge the City Council and the Mayor to maintain this tradition in its current location to ensure a safe, fiscally responsible, and inclusive event for all residents.
