Jacques DURAND a lancé cette pétition adressée à firefox

Firefox forcibly disabled extensions (or add-ons) of millions and millions of users today, without prior notice or consent.

These extensions are used to work, shop, for browsing comfort, productivity, blocking adult content or others and are voluntarily added by users. They allow features that Firefox don t have and some are extremely useful and loved by millions of users.

Yet Firefox with a recent auto-update forcibly disabled them, without prior notice or consent. Plus, re-activating them is not possible unless going through technical steps, making it really hard for casual users.

I wrote this petition because specifically, Firefox forcibly disabled the adult content filter on my daughter's laptop and it was the day she unknowingly accessed shocking content.

Theses practices are irresponsible and disrespectful of the user and have to stop.

Today, around 10 o'clock, I opened Firefox and received a notification.

"Some extensions could not be verified and have been disabled."

I looked at the problem. Out of my 13 extensions, 11 have been disabled. I have been looking at which ones. Many of them where simple productivity apps, others where adult content filters.

Moments later I ate lunch with my family. I saw my 11 years old girl distant, her mind was elsewhere. I thought she had some problems at school. I took time to make her feel supported and cared for by her family. Finally she explained to me what happened. She told me that she saw "strange things" on some website she "heard about in school" called Chatroulette. This is a website where strangers meet with their camera on, and where some twisted guys regularly like to expose their genitals to new users.

I knew about this website, and more generally about adult content being too accessible to children. That is why I put an adult content filter months ago on her laptop. I tested the adult content filter and I regularly kept it updated. But today, Firefox forcibly disabled the adult content filter on my daughter's laptop and it was the day she unknowingly accessed shocking content.

I checked my 8 year old boy's laptop too. The filter is disabled too. He does not seem to have accessed some adult content but on the internet, adult content is always one search query and one click away.

This is not the first time Firefox did this. Years ago from some version change I also had most of my plug-ins disabled without my consent. This is becoming something normal for Firefox to forcibly manipulate people's installation of their software to suit their thinking of new versions, updates and so on, without the user's consent or even prior notice.

Without our consent, Firefox manipulated all our browser to suits its internal norms without thoroughly considering repercussions on the users.

Without our consent it disabled functional changes that the users wanted or needed and went through multiple steps to install : their extensions.

It is a totally irresponsible and unacceptable way to operate such a company with such a large audience.

Today I write this petition to ask them to :
1) Include in their internal rules to forbid modifying the users browser or functionality without the user's prior information and consent. What should be considered politeness and common sense is visibly absent of Firefox's practices and this has to change now.
2 ) Revert their changes, and let users use their extensions and adult content filters normally, and ask them if they want to implement their new changes or not

Thank you for your signature, and for sharing this petition to make our voices heard.
