The Issue

Previously...

In 2014,  Officer Jason Lentz was fired from the Elgin Police Department after stating on his personal social media account that the police officer who shot unarmed 18-year-old, Michael Brown, in Ferguson, Missouri "did society a favor." In 2015, this decision was overturned due to the city/department's violation of a collective bargaining agreement. Instead, he received a 6-month suspension without pay for disregarding orders to take the post down. While this issue is already decided, I felt it necessary to share because it provides telling context into the history and character of Officer Jason Lentz.

In October 2025, Jason Lentz has created controversy once again when he allegedly posted the following publicly from his personal social media account:

"If I were ICE I wouldn't check La Movida at 840 N State St in Elgin for illegals. Definitely none there! Also wouldn't check the flea market where the old Milk Pail was at 14N630 Rt 25 in West Dundee, there's no way you'd find any there. Also wouldn't check The Elgin Mall of East Dundee which is located at 535 Dundee Ave in East Dundee, i guarantee there's no illegals there either! @Department of Homeland Security @U.S. Customs and Border Control"

It is my belief that this post violates the Illinois TRUST Act, which states that "Unless presented with a federal criminal warrant, or otherwise required by federal law, a law enforcement agency or official may not participate, support or assist in any capacity with an immigration agent's enforcement operations." (5 ILCS 805/15 h)

It is also my belief that his conduct violates the standard operating procedures listed on the Elgin Police Department's website by negatively affecting the public's perception of the department. (16.3.2 Off-Duty Use of Social Media)

According to the Elgin Police Department's official Facebook page, Officer Jason Lentz has been put on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. It is unclear whether that is paid or unpaid at this time.

If you feel that Officer Jason Lentz's post negatively impacts your perception of the Elgin Police Department and that he should be fired, please sign this petition.

Or, call Elgin Police Department's Non-Emergency line at 847-289-2700 to express your concerns directly.
