Recognise Bristo Square, in its current state, as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Issue
This petition calls for Fiona Hyslop Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs to recognise Bristo Square as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Bristo square has been available to the public in its current form for the last 33 years.
The square, as it is, serves the people that rush by and the friends that sit with smiles. It is a space for local artists to develop their craft and provides a space for people from all backgrounds to come together.
This petition seeks to first stop the redevelopment of a popular and safe Homebase of skate culture and friendship. If you cannot easily understand the lessons learned at Bristo Square start with imagining the mixture between Peter Pan and Harry Potter and you will capture a fraction of what happens minute by metre there.
The development will ruin all possible friendships and stories created from learning the tricks of the trade together.
Similar to the Long Live Southbank Campaign, Bristo Square should be available to inherit by future generations. http://www.llsb.com
If this development cannot be stopped it would be nice if the
- The University of Edinburgh were to investigate the importance of the unique cultural heritage of this public space through a culture and heritage report. This could be open to all subjects. This would be a similar report to the one performed by Long Live South Bank
- Calls for a town consultation to meet with all supporters of the development and those who oppose it. Whether this be auld friends, students or alumni or any body affected is what the petition represents.
- Deconstruction should be done with great care for the stone work, which could be kept by a skate organisation. To recreate the ledge haven or provide for the ledgends who have made art out of an architects plans.
- Provide alternative space for skateboarders, traceurs, BMXers and other folks who try bring joy to life.
-Re considers it's plans to re develop or gentrify the entire corner of university; when there are more pressing problems that happen outside the plush hall ways of learning, and into the playground where the boundaries aren't set.
Imagine the possible with skateboarding and then keep trying, that's what it teaches me as a slow rider; and there's always more to learn. Sir Isaac Newton would be amazed at these kids ability to defy gravity so gracefully and playfully.
Please sign other petitions which help your heart beat with a warm sense of mutual respect for the friendships found from listening and learning from each other.
