The Issue

A New Mexico judge ruled Meta a “public nuisance” and ordered it to pay $567 million for harming children — on top of $375 million a jury imposed for misrepresenting how safe its platforms were for young people. A California jury separately found Instagram and YouTube were designed to be addictive.

The design was deliberate. Courts have said so.

Here’s what we refuse to accept: that the story ends with a check. Nearly a billion dollars sounds like a lot — until you learn Meta earns $60 billion in a single quarter. If accountability stops at a fine, nothing changes. The same engineered manipulation keeps running.

And while these cases were about children, the manipulation they exposed — content built to capture attention, trigger compulsion, and override judgment — doesn’t check your age before it works on you. It affects every user, of every age. The children’s cases proved the mechanism. The mechanism harms all of us.

We are not asking to end social media. We’re asking that the most powerful communication medium ever built be made to serve the people who use it — instead of profiting by deceiving them.

The courts found the harm. Now the public is asking for the fix because fines aren’t enough.
