Addressed to: SEMARNAT, PROFEPA, and all other authorities responsible for wildlife protection in Mexico.
Our Story: This petition began by exposing the situation of the six dolphins at Hyatt Ziva Cancún. However, after more than a year of investigation, we realized that Hyatt was not an isolated case. For more than a year, we have been consistently monitoring all 13 dolphinariums that currently house dolphins in Quintana Roo. What we have documented shows that dolphin captivity is a systemic problem affecting hundreds of animals across Mexico.
Today, this petition represents every dolphin still living in captivity in our country.
A Reality We Can No Longer Ignore: Dolphins are highly intelligent and social animals. In the wild, they travel dozens of kilometers every day, live in complex family groups, and develop lifelong social bonds.
Today, at least 270 dolphins remain in captivity in Mexico, confined for commercial purposes and completely dependent on the people who keep them imprisoned.
In 2025, Mexico approved a reform to its General Wildlife Law. However, the reform contains loopholes and ambiguities that have hindered its implementation, and while these problems persist, the reality for many dolphins remains exactly the same. For them, a law that is not fully enforced does not change their reality. Every day that passes is another day in captivity.
Ventura Park/Punta Nizuc Shows Why This Cannot Wait, although both the park and the dolphinarium have closed, nine dolphins remain confined inside the closed facility. During more than 16 hours of observation, we documented their daily routine. We found dolphins between 13 and 38 years of age, some suffering from severe eye diseases, varying degrees of visual impairment, and even one dolphin with advanced cancer that has metastasized. We also documented that they go between 18 and 20 hours without receiving any food. In captivity, they cannot search for food on their own. They depend entirely on the people who keep them confined. This case reflects a reality that continues to repeat itself in the dolphinariums we monitor.
What Are We Asking For?
• Effective enforcement of Mexico’s General Wildlife Law, together with the correction of the loopholes that currently hinder its implementation.
• Transparency regarding the health status and future of every dolphin still living in captivity.
• Independent evaluations and ongoing oversight by veterinarians specializing in marine mammals, free from both industry and government influence.
• A commitment to ensure that the dolphins currently living in captivity become the last generation subjected to this system.
The Future of the Dolphins Already in Captivity
The dolphins already living in captivity will require individual solutions, evaluated case by case by independent specialists. Sea sanctuaries may offer an alternative for some animals, but by themselves they cannot resolve the situation of the more than 270 dolphins still living in captivity in Mexico. Alongside finding the best possible future for those already in captivity, we must ensure that no new generations are destined for this system.

Historia: Esta petición comenzó denunciando la situación de los seis delfines del Hyatt Ziva Cancún. Sin embargo, durante más de un año de investigación comprendimos que Hyatt no era un caso aislado. Desde hace más de un año monitoreamos de forma constante los 13 delfinarios que actualmente mantienen delfines en Quintana Roo. Lo que hemos documentado demuestra que el cautiverio de delfines es un problema sistémico que afecta a cientos de animales en México. Por eso, esta petición hoy representa a todos los delfines que permanecen en cautiverio en nuestro país.
Una realidad que no podemos seguir ignorando: Los delfines son animales altamente inteligentes y sociales. En libertad recorren decenas de kilómetros al día, viven en grupos familiares complejos y desarrollan relaciones que pueden durar toda la vida. Hoy, al menos 270 delfines permanecen en cautiverio en México, confinados para fines comerciales y dependiendo por completo de quienes los mantienen encerrados.
En 2025 se aprobó una reforma a la Ley General de Vida Silvestre. Sin embargo, la reforma contiene vacíos e imprecisiones que dificultan su aplicación y, mientras esos problemas persisten, la realidad de muchos delfines sigue siendo exactamente la misma.
Para ellos, una ley que no se aplica plenamente no cambia su realidad. Cada día que pasa es un día más de cautiverio.
Ventura Park/Punta Nizuc demuestra por qué esto no puede esperar. Aunque el parque y el delfinario cerraron sus puertas, nueve delfines continúan confinados dentro de un delfinario clausurado.
Durante más de 16 horas documentamos su rutina diaria. Encontramos delfines de entre 13 y 38 años de edad, algunos con graves enfermedades oculares, distintos grados de discapacidad visual e incluso un delfín con cáncer avanzado con metástasis. También documentamos que permanecen entre 18 y 20 horas sin recibir alimento. En cautiverio no pueden buscar comida por sí mismos: dependen por completo de quienes los mantienen encerrados. Este caso refleja una realidad que sigue repitiéndose en los delfinarios que monitoreamos.
¿Qué pedimos?
• Que la Ley General de Vida Silvestre se aplique de manera efectiva y se corrijan los vacíos que hoy dificultan su cumplimiento.
• Transparencia sobre el estado de salud y el futuro de todos los delfines que permanecen en cautiverio.
• Evaluaciones y seguimiento por médicos veterinarios especialistas en mamíferos marinos, independientes tanto de la industria como del gobierno.
• Que los delfines que hoy permanecen en cautiverio sean realmente la última generación destinada a este sistema.
El futuro de los delfines que ya existen
Los delfines que ya viven en cautiverio necesitarán soluciones individuales, evaluadas caso por caso por especialistas independientes. Los santuarios marinos pueden representar una alternativa para algunos animales, pero por sí solos no pueden resolver la situación de los más de 270 delfines que permanecen en cautiverio en México. Además de buscar el mejor futuro posible para quienes ya existen, debemos impedir que nuevas generaciones sigan siendo destinadas al cautiverio.
