Filthy, Overcrowded, Deadly: Oversight at Krome Detention Center Now

The Issue

No one should be held in filthy, overcrowded, inhumane conditions in the United States.

At the Krome Detention Center in Miami, over 1,700 immigrants were crammed into a facility designed to hold 600. Detainees have reported sleeping on concrete floors, being denied showers and phone calls, and going days without access to clean water or adequate food.

Medical neglect is rampant. Some are denied basic care like warm clothing or blood pressure medication. At least two people have died at Krome since January.

A federal employee described it bluntly: “It feels unsafe to walk around the facility.”

Even more disturbing, the Department of Homeland Security shut down three oversight offices just as complaints and deaths started rising. These independent watchdogs were created to investigate abuse, neglect, and corruption in ICE facilities. Without them, no one is watching what happens behind closed doors.

We demand immediate federal intervention at Krome and the restoration of independent oversight at all ICE detention centers.

Specifically, we call on:

  • The Department of Homeland Security to allow independent inspections of Krome Detention Center and reinstate the DHS Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman.
  • Congress to hold hearings on the conditions at Krome and introduce legislation mandating humane standards, medical care, and accountability across all ICE facilities.
  • The Trump administration to halt the expansion of ICE detention facilities

What’s happening at Krome is not just a failure of policy—it’s a humanitarian crisis. We must act now to end this abuse.
