Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, some causing illness in people and others that circulate among animals, including camels, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people exposed to infected animals, and then spread among people, as has been seen with MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV, and now 2019-nCoV.

2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring. At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people.

Issues of racism being accused to Filipinos arose due to the proposed banning of Chinese locals to the Philippines. Other people even compared Filipinos agreeing to the banning of Chinese locals to Yong Suk, a famous character in Train to Busan who closed the doors in the train thinking everyone in the other side of the door is infected and resisted to let other people come in the safe side of the train. Also, people had already the mindset that all Chinese are infected with the said virus. This issue is now shaking the social media world. Social media users have mixed reactions with the said banning. Others scream humanity as they disagree to the proposed ban. However, some also denies racism and supports the proposed idea.

We, the creators of this petition denies racism to the said ban. The banning of tourists coming from China is not racism. It is care to humanity as we close the borders of our beloved country. It is an act of protecting our countrymen and is not an act of condemning Chinese people. The purpose of the temporary ban is to make every Filipino safe and secured. It is our way to protect ourselves from catastrophic damages due to the raging virus. Chinese nationals are said to be potential carriers and temporary banning could be a way to prevent the disease to spread. In addition, the medical field present in our country may not be able to control such epidemic to enter our country and the Chinese government even discourage locals to travel around.

Finally, it is not racist to temporarily ban Chinese residents to our country as we don't have the best medical field yet and it is an act of preventing such diseases to spread. It is not to degrade the race but it is about the location where the virus started that threatens great harm to humanity.
