AN ACCLAMATION BY A GRATEFUL NATION DECLARING NORA CABALTERA VILLAMAYOR (NORA AUNOR) AS THE FILIPINO PEOPLE'S NATIONAL ARTIST

 

WHEREAS, a People’s Initiative is based on the principle that “the Philippines is a democratic and republican State” and that “sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them,” as enshrined in the 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines (Article 2, Section 1).

WHEREAS, Nora Aunor is a national treasure because she represents a part of every Filipino with her portrayals and achievements on film, television, and music. From her younger days peddling water at a train station in Bicol to superstardom in the Philippine entertainment industry for decades, from rags to riches and then again rags to riches, her entire history depicts our own struggles as individuals and as a nation.

WHEREAS, Nora Aunor’s illustrious career in the local entertainment industry was marked with several astounding and pioneering achievements, thereby earning the popular and lasting moniker “Superstar”. She has a filmography of 176 films, most of which have won honors locally and internationally. She was among the most successful television performers in the country, with her weekly musical variety program lasting more than two decades, and her drama series drawing critical acclaim.

WHEREAS, Nora Aunor’s body of work for film and broadcast arts went beyond the glamour and fame of showbusiness to stir our consciousness as Filipinos, both individually and as a nation. She has effectively and courageously utilized, even to the point of subversion, her own craft as a multimedia artist to express the realities in our society, move us to appreciation of the message, and more importantly to enlightenment and action.

WHEREAS, to this date, Nora Aunor’s achievements on film and broadcast arts, as well as the broad acceptance and recognition she has received from peers, critics, and various sectors including the government, Church, academe, and civil society, and as affirmed by numerous industry and institutional recognitions, and all the international and local acting honors and lifetime achievement awards given her remain unparalleled.

NOW, THEREFORE, WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, invoking the sovereignty of the people in our democracy, and with the acclamation of a grateful nation, hereby declare NORA AUNOR as the FILIPINO PEOPLE'S NATIONAL ARTIST.
