The Issue

Petition to Protect the Right to Keep Backyard Poultry

To: The Board of Commissioners of Newton County, Georgia

From: The Undersigned Residents and Property Owners of Newton County

Statement of Purpose

We, the undersigned residents of Newton County, hereby formally state our opposition to any current or proposed ordinances that restrict, limit, or infringe upon the rights of property owners to keep backyard poultry, including both chickens and roosters.

Our county has a deep-rooted agricultural heritage, and the right to raise our own livestock is fundamental to our self-sufficiency, food security, and way of life. While we understand the need for reasonable peace and order, blanket bans or overly restrictive regulations on chickens and roosters ignore the desires of the community as a whole.

Why We Stand Against These Restrictions:

Food Sovereignty: Raising chickens provides local families with a sustainable, healthy source of fresh food.

Property Rights: Responsible landowners should have the freedom to use their property for small-scale agriculture without government overreach.

Flock Protection and Breeding: Roosters are essential for the natural protection of a flock against predators and are necessary for those who wish to sustain their flocks through natural breeding.

Action Requested:

We respectfully demand that the Board of Commissioners protect our traditional rights by rejecting any proposed restrictions on chickens and roosters, and instead focus on supporting the agricultural freedoms of Newton County citizens
