The Issue

North Cobb High School has decided to cut both the architecture and the engineering pathways from the school curriculum starting in the fall of 2025 in order to redirect funding towards the athletic department. This decision was made with little say from students or faculty at North Cobb High School and little warning as well. This choice is actively denying students the ability to choose a pathway in either engineering or architecture, both currently highly in-demand occupational fields, and which would provide job opportunities for many future graduates. In addition, this decision is preventing students, such as myself, who have already started either of these pathways from successfully completing their pathway and taking the End of Pathway Assessment (EOPA) to get a certificate in their respective field. Thus, students who have already spent one to three years on this pathway are not going to be given the opportunity to gain recognition for their dedication and hard work in these pathways.

This choice continues to harmfully impact the futures of students at North Cobb High School when taken into consideration that architecture and engineering are both taught and highly regarded at the Georgia Institute of Technology, not only one of the top schools in the nation, but with the HOPE Scholarship and Zell Miller Scholarship, Georgia students have the opportunity to attend this school for free. By defunding the architecture and engineering pathways, North Cobb High School is preventing students from finding a vocation that could allow them not only job opportunities, but being able to receive a nationally honored education with no student debt. This opportunity is not one to be taken lightly, and North Cobb High School has done exactly that.

Action needs to be taken quickly, as there are only two months before the fall semester begins, and curriculum changes won’t be able to be made until 2026 or until the next school year. By providing little warning, North Cobb High School has left little room for essential action to be made to prevent the defunding of the architecture and engineering programs. A whole class of students are being denied completion of their pathway in favor of the athletic department, and action must be taken now so the admin of North Cobb High School can hear our voice.
