Fight period stigma with a taboo-free period emoji!

The Issue

FR

What if there was an emoji that really talks about periods?

From the youngest age, generations of women have learnt that their periods are shameful and embarrassing. Even though there's no reason to be afraid of it, we still use “period-slang” phrases such as “Aunt Flo”, we fear the tiniest stain, and we look for the best ways to smuggle tampons or pads up a sleeve.
Menstruation remains a huge taboo. Yet it is part of the daily lives of millions of women.

We rarely talk about periods, even online, which sometimes feel like a free-speech zone. Actually, there is no REAL period emoji.

With blood drop, explosion or volcano emojis, we manage to mention a few effects felt during periods, but there is still no emoji that talks ONLY about periods. To make it real, we need clear words and images. When you represent something, it exists. Emojis have become a language of their own, spreading far beyond our phones, crossing borders.

We should not have to use a simple tiny drop of blood to talk about periods, especially knowing that some girls are facing discrimination over their period, that millions can't afford proper period products and are suffering from period poverty and when women suffer from menstrual-related illnesses. Fighting this stigma is key to improving equality, and an emoji would be a meaningful step towards normalizing menstruation.

What if you could join the fight against this period stigma with a symbol that REALLY symbolizes menstruation? Today, We, .YZ and Règles Élémentaires, the first French NGO which tackles period poverty and stigma, are introducing this new #periodemoji, but we need YOU to join the cause and spread the word!
