Fight for Northampton - We need our own council
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
Our town is under threat.
Following the failings of Northamptonshire County Council a government inspector is proposing that all of Northampton's public services should be lumped in with those from South Northants (Towcester, Brackley etc) and the Daventry area, in a new “West Northants” authority.
This petition is to keep Northampton's decisions in the hand's of Northampton's people.
This really matters because:
Having a Council over such a huge geographical area that joins together a major urban area like Northampton with small villages will not work. The needs and challenges of one of Europe's fastest growing towns are completely different to those of our rural neighbours.
The failures in the County Council are not the fault of the people of Northampton. People living here should not have to pay the price for Northamptonshire County Council's failure.
Northampton has a proud history as a separate borough since the 9th century. The proposed West Northants authority would break that link to its history and heritage.
The proposals as they are set on now will mean that the wishes of the people of Northampton could be safely ignored in a unitary authority dominated by councillors representing rural areas.
The proposals also mean that councillors who are elected will be representing huge numbers of people (10,000 as compared with the 4,000) and will be more distant from the issues in local communities.
Please join me and others in fighting for Northampton and call on our local MP’s, Michael Ellis, Andrew Lewer and Andrea Leadsom to ask Secretary of State, James Brokenshire, to agree for a new separate and independent unitary council for Northampton, delivering all the services that were previously run by Northamptonshire County Council and Northampton Borough Council in our town.
We the undersigned residents of Northampton call on the Government to make Northampton a unitary council as this is the only option that will preserve Northampton’s heritage and deliver a democratic and sustainable future for our town.
