Fight for a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers

The Issue

I am a current student at Foothill College and a first time generation DREAMer and DACA recipient. I am writing to you today to express myself, my concerns and advocate for those who do not speak or write English. We were brought here as young kids by our parents for a better living, better opportunities and have contributed to this society and our economy to a vast amount. We have exhausted ourselves and our pockets hurt at the fact that we have to pay to renew our DACA every two years.

We urge you to advocate for us and speak on our behalf and introduce a policy that will give us a pathway to citizenship and avoid deportation especially under this new administration. There are currently so many deportations all around the Country and we are getting worried we will be one of them if we do not secure our legal status here. We are not asking for much, we simply want to work peacefully and walk without being worried that something will happen to us and be sent back to our country that we are not familiar with nor belong to.

The policy should be long-term and better than DACA, and something that is permanent and stable. This will help us with our careers and if we become residents we will be able to receive funding such as FAFSA, be able to take our federal and private loans, and apply for various scholarships. Although we benefit from the Dream Act, it is not enough since we still have to pay out of our pockets with any saved money we have since we cannot take our loans.

We have contributed to this economy a lot. With the SSN we were given through DACA, we were able to work and make tax contributions and many of us have opened up businesses that give others jobs. Not only that, but we have also contributed to programs such as Social Security. In addition, with the money we make, we purchase things and support businesses for our economy to remain strong. We have obtained jobs in different fields and have remained to work here to make this country a better living for current and future generations.

Overall, we have made this country a better living and we want to continue doing this and if a pathway to citizenship is given to us, we will be able to obtain better jobs and make America stronger than it currently is.
