Petition to FIBA: Approve Nneka Ogwumike’s Eligibility to Represent Nigeria in International Basketball

Why This Matters

Nneka Ogwumike — WNBA Champion, former MVP, and proud Nigerian-American — is being denied the right to represent Nigeria, her country of birthright and heritage, on the international basketball stage.

We are calling on the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) to grant Nneka Ogwumike approval to play for the Nigerian national team, a move that aligns with FIBA's own rules and the core values of fairness, identity, and the global growth of basketball.

🧬 Her Roots Run Deep
Born in the United States to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Nneka holds Nigerian citizenship and has always embraced her cultural identity. She has publicly expressed her desire to give back to Nigeria by contributing to the success of its women’s national basketball team — affectionately known as D’Tigress.

She is not a naturalized player — she is Nigerian by blood, by name, and by heart.

🏀 She Has Not Played for Team USA in the Olympics
Though Nneka has played in exhibitions and training camps for Team USA, she has never appeared in a senior FIBA or Olympic competition that permanently ties her to the United States team under FIBA’s own rules.

So why block her from honoring her heritage and joining her sisters on the Nigerian squad?

🌍 This Is Bigger Than Basketball
Nneka’s participation would:

✅ Inspire millions of young African girls and athletes worldwide
✅ Elevate African women’s basketball on the global stage
✅ Honor her right to choose where she belongs
✅ Bring visibility and investment to the African game
✅ Set a precedent of fairness and inclusivity in sport

✊🏽 FIBA, Do the Right Thing
We urge FIBA to:

Approve Nneka Ogwumike’s request to represent Nigeria
Respect her dual identity and deep connection to her heritage
Apply eligibility rules fairly and consistently
Empower athletes — especially women — to own their narrative and give back to their communities
