Lewis Hamilton should get a harsher penalty for causing 200mph 51g crash

The Issue

On Sunday the 18th of July during the Lewis Hamilton caused a crash in Silverstone during the British GP that send title rival Max Verstappen in to the barriers with a speed of 200mph/320kph which could have killed him.

Unlike what some of Lewis’ very vocal fans would like you to believe, Verstappen was not as fault whatsoever. Lewis, on a full tank, on the dirty side of the track was never going to make that corner while flat out, which he would have definitely known. Lewis end up completely missing the curb and the apex, understeering into Verstappen. Hamilton’s fans have been saying “Max turned in on Lewis”; no he didn’t. From Hamilton’s onboard it looks that way, however if you look at the different camera angles you can clearly see that Verstappen is taking the right line but because Hamilton understeers it looks like Max is turning sharper than he is (on Hamilton’s onboard). Look at how Hamilton approached copse with Max vs. Charles and Lando. In Max’s case he went in with way too much speed, completely misjudged the corner, missed the apex, missed the curb by 1.5 meters and understeered in to Verstappen’s rear wheel. In the other two cases Lewis all of a sudden remembered how to drive and was riding the curb for most of it before pushing Leclerc wide.
Lewis later had the audacity to attempt to blame the accident on Max by saying; Max needs to learn how to drive less aggressive, while he (Lewis) forced Leclerc wide, sounds like he is complaining that Max defended well and doesn’t just go where Lewis tells him to go.  He puts all the blame on Max and says that Leclerc went wider so that he could make the overtake. Leclerc went wider because he saw what Lewis did to Max. With Leclerc both Lewis actually managed to take the apex while both of them were moving slower. If you look at Leclerc’s and Bottas’ racing line through the same corner they were right up to the white curb, while Hamilton was 1.5m away from it.

Hamilton was never in front of Verstappen, it was Verstappen’s corner to take. Max gave Lewis more space than he needed to give, he even steered away from Hamilton to give him more space, but it was to no avail; Hamilton who was carrying too much speed into the corner and wasn’t position right understeered in to Verstappen rear tire. Hamilton was desperate to get past Max, as it would be a lot harder to get close to Verstappen after the first lap and would pretty much have been a lost race, maybe he wanted to make a statement as well. When you are going into the corner with that mindset, you are driving dangerously. He was committed no matter what, wouldn’t back out of it even though it should have been clear to Lewis that he would never make that corner. Lewis knew there was a huge risk they were going to hit each other if he attempted an overtake in copse, however he felt like he had to do it as Max would otherwise drive off and take the win. The frustration of getting consistently outraced, and the pressure of it being his home GP got to him, and unfortunately he got majorly rewarded.

Lewis hit Verstappen’s rear that catapulted the latter into the tires barrier. The impact Verstappen made was massive at a speed of 200mph/320kph and a g-force of 51, not even mentioning the fact that the impact was on the side of his car. It took a while for Verstappen to get out of his completely wrecked car, - he looked to be shaken and in pain, his board radio was quite scary to listen to as well - before he was taken away by an ambulance. Verstappen could have easily gotten seriously hurt or worse. Max was extremely lucky and managed to walk away from the horrific accident with only minor injuries.

It is absolutely disgraceful that the FiA only gave Lewis a 10 second penalty for sending his title rival to the hospital for something that was clearly caused by a mistake he (lewis) made. When we look at other penalties handed out this season the minuscule penalty does not measure up. Especially because it was at the beginning of the race (in teh fastest car) and Lewis already got lucky with the red flag - which he caused - where he got a free pitstop, the 10 seconds didn’t hurt his race in any way. With this incident and the following penalty Formula 1 is essentially saying that it is completely a-okay to ram your closest rival off the circuit and gain the maximum from it yourself.
“When someone destroys your race through their error, and they get a tap on the hand, and are then allowed to come back and finish ahead of the person they took out, it does not weigh up” - Hamilton 2018

this apparently doesn’t apply to him

His behavior after the race was absolutely disgraceful; Lewis celebrated as if he had just raced the greatest race of all time and won the championship, his post race interviews were extremely disappointing. I understand you can celebrate a podium, however the extent he was going to celebrate was extremely disrespectful and unsportsmanlike. Post race he didn’t speak a word of Verstappen - except when he went as low as to blame him for the accident - not even once saying “I hope he is okay”. Later on social media he posted a pretentious caption in which he said that he is all for fair racing and that he was so proud of this win. That race was anything but “fair” or something to be “proud” off. Till this point he still hasn’t taken responsibility or apologized to Verstappen.

Hamilton should have been penalized harsher for him causing a huge accident that send Verstappen to the hospital and him closer to the lead of the championship.

Side note:

I just want to say how absolutely disgusted I am by toxic Hamilton fans online (and the fans cheering when Verstappen crashed). Lot’s of you are trying to excuse Hamilton’s actions by trying to deflect the attention away from him; “Max had done it a lot too” when? When has Max ever done anything to this extent? I’ll tell you; never! Also when they say “he does it all the time” they forget about the fact that he has been a really clean driver for the past few seasons, stop harassing Max for Lewis’ mistakes and behavior. Max has never caused a crash like this, especially not sending another driver to the hospital. Also we are talking about this race aren’t we?! You Hamilton fans are really grasping at straws to take some of the heat away from Lewis who has caused quite a few crashes in the past few seasons.  Some exactly like the Sunday’s crash: Albon 2019/2020, Rosberg 2016 (in all cases he was fighting for podium places or wins) Yes Verstappen’s driving style is aggressive, but it is also controlled. Hamilton on the other hand is a dirty driver whenever he has competition.

There are also a lot of stans who apparently get off on saying “stop crying” or “drama queen”. How childish are you? Do you not have any realization of how dangerous that crash was? It’s a shame that it has to come down to someone dying before some of these “fans” finally realize that the crashes aren’t funny or anything to take lightly.

Finally the most disgusting of them all, the “fans” who say that he deserved it, it was karma, that they wished he would have died. What the actual hell is wrong with you people!?! And unfortunately there are a lot of those comments that are liked by thousands of Hamilton’s fans. Shame on you. You people are an absolute embarrassment to Formula One fans

The amount of abusive comments Verstappen has received from Lewis’ fans - for something that wasn’t even his fault, and he was the victim of - is actually disturbing. This online fanbase is so incredibly toxic, why do you feel the need to be so incredibly disrespectful and hateful towards drivers?

btw F1 posted an “analysis” (there was no analysis involved, it was just them giving their opinion)  by two of their journalists who happen to be Hamilton biggest fans, trying to defend Hamilton for 7 minutes straight in laughable matter. Shame on you F1 for posting that incredibly biased video, but I guess it isn’t news that everyone involved has “British Biased”. It also took them until the next day to actually make a post about Verstappen and how was doing, while the posted a lot about Lewis parading around like he just accomplished the proudest achievement in the word. Shameful
